This back piece was done on a longtime client of mine. He wanted the lettering done on him first, which has to do with fighting demons that present themselves through various points in life. After that, we decided on this image which is a fairly popular motif in Japanese mythology of a samurai fighting a demon. The design is based off of an illustration from 100 Demons of Horikoshi III.

This was a custom piece for a client wanting a phoenix design. Much of the tattoo work was done freehand, meaning that I drew the design directly on the skin first. This creates a more organic design that conforms to the body. Photo by Ethan Hill.

According to Chinese mythology, a carp that could swim upstream and leap past the waterfall called Dragon Gate would become a dragon. This design was meant to capture that transformation. Most of the tattoo work is freehand.
